Quick start

How to calculate a tip and split a bill

Enter the bill amount, tip percentage and number of people. Read tip, total, and per-person amounts.

  1. Step 1
    Enter bill + people

Type the bill total, pick a currency and set how many people are splitting. Defaults match a typical dinner-for-four.

  2. Step 2
    Pick a tip percent

    Tap a preset (10 / 15 / 18 / 20 / 25 %) or enter a custom value. Toggle round-up if you want whole-dollar per-person amounts.

  3. Step 3
    Pay & settle

The highlighted 'Per person' tile is what each diner owes. Tip-per-person is also shown for splitting cash tips separately.

Splitting fairly

  • Even split — easiest. Use this tool's default. Works when everyone ate similarly.
  • Itemised — pull receipts; each person pays for their items plus a proportional share of tax and tip. Use a spreadsheet for groups larger than 5.
  • Round-up cover — toggle round-up so each pays whole units; one person covers the leftover with the tip. Friendly for cash settling.

Pre-tax vs post-tax tips

In the US, the polite-but-thrifty move is to tip on the subtotal (pre-tax). The generous move is to tip on the total (post-tax). The difference is usually $1-3 on a normal bill.

This tool computes tip on whatever bill amount you enter. To tip pre-tax, enter the subtotal; to tip post-tax, enter the total. Either way, what you see in the 'Total' field is what you'll actually pay.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool send my bill anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. No network requests fire during use.

How much should I tip?

Norms vary by country and service. US sit-down restaurants: 15-20% pre-tax is standard, 20-25% for great service. Europe: tip is often included; 5-10% rounding-up is appreciated. Always check the bill for an automatic service charge first.

Is tip calculated before or after tax?

This tool computes tip on the bill amount you enter — so if you want to tip pre-tax, enter the subtotal; if post-tax, enter the total. US convention is pre-tax.

What does 'round up to whole' do?

Per-person amounts can have awkward cents. Round-up moves each person's share to the next whole currency unit, so settling in cash is easier. The 'tip' field absorbs the extra rounding.

Why is the currency dropdown small?

We use Intl.NumberFormat for currency display, which supports every ISO 4217 code. The dropdown lists common ones; if you need others, this tool formats whatever code your browser knows.

Can I tip a different amount per person?

Not in this UI — the split is equal. If you want a captain's-tip style split (one person covers extra), do the math on a calculator and override the tip percent.
