In-depth guide

Volume converter — metric, US cooking, cubic units

Convert between twelve volume units — millilitres, litres and cubic metres on the metric side; teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces, pints, quarts and gallons (US customary) on the recipe side; plus cubic inches and cubic feet for engineering.

US vs UK Imperial

This converter uses US customary measures for tsp / tbsp / cup / fl oz / pt / qt / gal. The Imperial counterparts share the same names but are different sizes:

  • 1 UK Imperial gallon ≈ 4.54609 L (vs 3.7854 US)
  • 1 UK Imperial fluid ounce ≈ 28.4131 mL (vs 29.5735 US)
  • UK pint = 568.261 mL — the British pub pint, ~20% bigger than a US pint

If you specifically need Imperial volumes, multiply litres by 0.21997 for UK gallons or by 35.195 for UK fl oz.

Conversions worth memorising

  • 1 tsp ≈ 5 mL, 1 tbsp = 3 tsp ≈ 15 mL
  • 1 cup = 16 tbsp = 240 mL (rounded; exact is 236.59)
  • 1 L ≈ 33.81 US fl oz ≈ 4.227 US cups
  • 1 US gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups
  • 1 m³ = 1000 L

When to use it vs alternatives

Use this converter when you need a quick value across metric, imperial, data, time, or other unit systems. Use domain-specific engineering, lab, or compliance software when tolerances, significant figures, or standards must be formally controlled.

Step-by-step usage

  1. Type the value — Enter the volume and pick its unit. Switching units converts the displayed value so the meaning is preserved.
  2. Read every unit — Twelve units — metric, US cooking and cubic — update live. The source unit is highlighted.
  3. Copy the value — Click Copy on any row to grab the converted value. Everything runs locally — no upload.

Common pitfalls

  • Confirm the source unit before copying a result, especially when labels are similar across systems.
  • Rounding can matter for materials, shipping, science, and engineering calculations.
  • Check whether your context expects SI, IEC, US customary, imperial, or regional units.

Privacy and security

Browser-first by design. The tool page explains any exception before you use it.

Your conversion values stay in the browser and update locally as you type. EpitomeTool does not upload source values, copied results, or unit choices to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Which gallon does the converter use?

The US liquid gallon: 1 gal = 3.785411784 litres exactly. This is the most-requested unit for North American recipes, fuel and beverages. The UK Imperial gallon is about 20% larger (1 UK gal ≈ 4.54609 L); if you need it specifically, multiply litres by 0.21997 instead.

Are the cooking units US or UK?

US customary. 1 tsp = 4.929 mL, 1 tbsp = 14.787 mL, 1 cup = 236.59 mL, 1 fl oz = 29.574 mL. Australian metric cups (250 mL) and UK Imperial cups (284 mL) are different — convert via mL if you're not sure.

Is 1 cubic centimetre the same as 1 millilitre?

Yes. 1 cm³ = 1 mL exactly by SI definition since 1964. The unit isn't listed separately because it's interchangeable with mL; type a value as mL and read it as cm³.

How many fluid ounces in a litre?

Just over 33.81 US fluid ounces. A 500 mL water bottle is ≈ 16.9 fl oz, hence the common '16.9 oz' bottle size you see on US shelves.

What about barrels, kegs and exotic units?

Not supported — barrel definitions vary by industry (oil = 42 US gal, beer barrel = 31 US gal, wine barrel = 31.5 US gal). The supported list covers everyday cooking, science and commerce. For specialty conversions, multiply through litres manually.

Does the converter work offline?

Yes. Everything runs in your browser. No request leaves the page during conversion.
